Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM)

RCM selects maintenance strategies by examining required functions, functional failures, failure modes, consequences, and applicable tasks.

Practical guidance

Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM)

RCM asks what the asset must do, how it can fail to do it, what causes those failures, and what happens when they occur.

The result may include condition-based tasks, scheduled restoration or replacement, failure-finding tasks, design changes, or run-to-failure where consequence and economics justify it.

Key points

  • Start with function and failure
  • Consider consequence before task selection
  • Choose technically applicable tasks
  • Document assumptions and review performance
