Condition-based maintenance (CBM)

CBM initiates or adjusts maintenance based on observed asset condition rather than elapsed time alone.

Installed sensors supporting condition-based maintenance

Practical guidance

Condition-based maintenance (CBM)

Condition evidence may come from inspections, process information, online monitoring, laboratory tests, or diagnostic assessment.

A CBM program still requires decision rules, ownership, planning, and safety controls. A sensor alarm by itself is not a complete maintenance strategy.

Key points

  • Use condition to trigger review or work
  • Define thresholds and confirmation
  • Assign response ownership
  • Integrate with planning and scheduling
